Melrose Park Neighbors Association wish list for the

Melrose Park train station Restoration / Rebuilding 1/17/02

1. Re-build an inbound station (not just a shelter) that fits the character and style of the neighborhood by the 100th anniversary of the station (2005)

" Station building in the same style, plan, and material as the old Melrose Park train station preferred
" Incorporate the old inbound canopy, or at least the style of the canopy, into any new station design
" Make canopy renovations consistent with style of old canopy (see Radnor station inbound canopy as an example)
" Attach window boxes to station for plants (see Merion, Bryn Mawr stations for examples)
" Make lighting fixtures consistent with the style and character of the station (similar to the goose neck lamp posts) rather than large orange light boxes
" Replace sign in the station building that announces Melrose Park (the sign that passengers can see from the train)

2. Rehabilitate/restore the outbound station so that it could be reopened for the 100th anniversary of the station (2005)

" Try to get outbound building added to historical register so that it is available for federal funds
" Reopen the building to use as a waiting area or possibly sublet to a commercial tenant

3. Create landscaping and support for landscaping at the station and platform areas

" Landscape the station area to complement any new station building - $5,000 to implement and $1,000 yearly maintenance for landscaping
" Provide an outside spigot and source of water at the station for watering plants and landscaping
" Provide an electrical outlet and power for running a weeder or other tool at the station
" Incorporate planters into building design of new station or anchor concrete or other type of planters in platform
" Plant the corner at Mill and Valley Rds., including trees to help reduce noise, erosion, improve looks

4. Station support features

" Repave the station parking lot
" Repair waiting platforms, especially on in bound side

5. Investigate ways to reduce station vandalism, auto theft, and station safety to increase ridership

" Fence along far end of parking lot (Cheltenham Ave. side) to deter crime in the back of the parking lot
" Mount video cameras to record parking lot activity as a way to reduce/prosecute acts of vandalism, burglaries
" Work with SEPTA, Township police, and neighborhood watch to define a station safety plan
